The Rev. John Ballantine (1716-1776) was graduated from Harvard College in 1735 and was ordained as minister in Westfield, Mass., in 1741. He married Mary ("Molly") Gay (1726-1794) of Dedham, Mass., in 1743 and served as Westfield's pastor until his death in 1776. The Graduate School of Theology began as the Theological Department of Oberlin Collegiate Institute in 1833. William Gay Ballantine was born in 1848 and received his B.A. from Marietta College in 1868. In 1872, he graduated from Union Theological Seminary and entered upon post-graduate studies at the University of Leipzig. He served with the American Palestine Expedition in 1873. Before joining the Oberlin theological faculty in 1878, he taught at Ripon College and the University of Indiana.
